New Mexicans have every right to expect their elected officials to follow the law and uphold the dignity of the office. Representative Joseph Hernandez’s reported conduct at a Chicago hotel embarrassed our state! Representative Andrea Romero’s dual role as a legislator and an employee of the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office raised serious questions. These examples highlight a deeper problem. When one party holds overwhelming control, there’s a temptation to act as if normal standards don’t apply. Checks and balances matter, no matter the party affiliation. The law should apply equally to everyone, no exceptions for power or for party!
